PRINTER TROUBLESHOOTING

The Receipt/Journal printer is a mechanical dot matrix printer using an eight pin print head assembly, four pins (4) for the journal side and four (4) pins for the receipt side.

Ink is provided by a ribbon cassette. The printing speed is approximately 2.6 lines per second (lps). The receipt fast feed speed is aprox. 16 lines per second.

The R/J printer consists of three main modules. These are the printer power board, the BA2700 board, and the Epson 2728 printer mechanism.

The printer power board connects to the satellite board through the R/J printer cable. This board regulates the +24 volt output of the POS unit power supply (38 volts nominal) to 24 volts for the printer motors and solenoids. All other signals and voltages from the satellite are passed through this board to the other printer elements.

The BA2700 control board does the processing of the printer functions. This board receives the serial printer data and control characters from the satellite board, converts these into control signals and print head data, and sends these to the printer mechanism.

The Epson 2728 printer mechanism contains the motor drive, print heads, paper feed, knife cut mechanism, etc. The 2728 performs the job of printing the data on the receipt and journal paper, paper feeding, sensing paper low, sensing for check in place during check write/validation, etc. This unit gets its control information and data from the BA2700 board.

The BA2700 board should have jumpers J1 and J3 cut out or removed. This isolates frame ground, logic ground (+5 volt return), and power ground (+24 volt return) at the printer. The only place these ground are connected are at the satellite or master power supply board.

IMPORTANT: During installatin an external braided ground wire (shipped with POS system) must be connected from the printer frame (chassis) to the satellite or master frame (chassis) ground. This is to protect the terminal against electrostatic discharge (ESD). Also, in a configuration where the printer sits on top of the cash drawer, an additional ground wire (shipped with each drawer) must be run from the printer frame to the cash drawer. Attach it to one of the screws on the bottom rear of the cash drawer.

Voltage Checks

The printer uses +24 V, +12V, -12V, and +5V. The printer grounding system uses three (3) separate grounds. There is frame ground (safety), power ground (+24V return path), and logic ground (+5v,+12V, -12V return path).

These grounds are isolated from each other in the system. They are only connected together at one point in the power supply board. This protects the logic circuits from the current spikes and noise generated by the printer motor, print heads, knife cut, and cash drawer solenoids.

The printer voltages and their respective grounds are found on connector 3 of the printer power board.

By shorting Pin 2 to Pin 4 on CN5 of the BA2700 board, the printer will enter the Printer Diagnostic Mode when power is turned on at POS, The printer will print it's character set on the receipt and journal paper. The receipt side will paper feed and knife cut between character sets.

CAUTION: Never run the R/J printer without paper and ribbon installed. Doing so will damage the print head pins and rubber paper drive rollers.
